How Invisalign® Works

The process of getting Invisalign begins in our office when you and Dr. Dawoud meet to discuss how Invisalign works. We’ll take measurements of your mouth, along with x-rays, photos, and impressions of your teeth. These will be the basis of the treatment plan that we develop with the technicians at Invisalign. When this step is completed, a 3D representation of your smile is produced that shows step-by-step how your smile will straighten. Your customized aligners are then produced by Invisalign and sent to our office.

The aligners are dispensed in a series of pairs. Simply wear a pair for two weeks then move on to the next pair. If worn for at least 22 hours every day, you can anticipate completing your Invisalign orthodontic treatment in 12 to 24 months, which is much faster than the average treatment time for traditional metal braces!

Invisalign® FAQs

Invisalign in Millburn, NJ requires an investment of your time and money, so it’s completely normal to want to know as much as possible about the treatment upfront. Don’t worry – our team is here to help you find all the answers! We’d be happy to answer any specific questions you have during your initial consultation. We’ve also responded to some common questions about Invisalign below.

How Long Does Invisalign® Take?

Naturally, the answer depends entirely on your treatment plan. For example, if the clear aligners are simply being used to address minor spacing and crowding issues, then your treatment could be completed in as little as six months. Conversely, more severe orthodontic issues will need significantly more time to correct. With that being said, most patients wear the trays for 12 to 18 months, which is significantly shorter than traditional braces.

Does Invisalign® Hurt?

The good news is that Invisalign designed their patented clear aligners with comfort in mind. As a result, they are certainly more comfortable than traditional braces. Of course, some soreness is to be expected – that’s how you know they are working! The slight discomfort is a direct result of the pressure being placed on your teeth, which gently moves them closer and closer to their properly aligned positions. Fortunately, there are several effective ways to keep any soreness at bay, including drinking cold water and taking an OTC pain reliever.

What Happens After Invisalign®?

Orthodontic treatment doesn’t end when you’re done working through your series of trays. To keep your teeth in their perfectly aligned positions, our cosmetic dentist in Millburn will provide you with a retainer. Luckily, it’ll be equally as discreet, ensuring it won’t detract from the appearance of your beautiful new smile. For the first six months or so, you’ll be asked to wear it for 20-22 hours a day. Once your teeth have “set,” you can transition to wearing it only at night.

What Are Invisalign® Attachments?

Essentially, Invisalign attachments are little pieces of tooth-colored resin that are adhered directly to your teeth. While they may be small, they play a big role in correcting more moderate and severe cases of malocclusion. That’s because they give the aligners something to grip onto! Depending on your dental needs, you may only have a handful, or you may have one on each tooth. Ultimately, it will depend on the details of your treatment plan. Don’t worry – the aligners will still be completely removable, and your natural tooth enamel won’t be compromised in the process.
